Tim Crook - Head of Radio and Senior Lecturer in Media Law and Ethics in the Media and Communications Department at Goldsmiths, University of London

 

Tim Crook has been teaching and examining undergraduate and postgraduate courses and programmes in media production, media law and scriptwriting since 1991. His areas of expertise are international media law & ethics and the representation of espionage in factual and fictional literature. He has been the recipient of two Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching awards for the development of Intranet teaching resources and was awarded a College Peake award for teaching in 2009. He has been an external examiner for a variety of UK universities and has a current appointment with City of Birmingham University. His conference presentations include papers on radio drama, journalism, broadcasting history and propaganda.

He is an active reviewer of books for academic journals.
 
Media Career:

He has been a journalist since the age of 16. His career has involved newspaper, radio and television reporting, radio presentation and investigative projects for a variety of national and international media companies: ITN, BBC, The Independent, Independent Radio News and LBC.
He won a Campaign for Freedom of Information Award for campaigning against courtroom secrecy and establishing a statutory right of appeal against Crown Court reporting bans. He secured the first broadcast of ceremonial proceedings at the Royal Courts of Justice when he recorded the valedictory speeches of Master of the Rolls Lord Denning in 1982. He was the first UK broadcaster to announce the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997.
He has also had a parallel career in drama as writer, producer and director in theatre, radio and television and received awards and nominations at Prix Italia, Writers’ Guild of Great Britain, Sony and the International Radio Festival of New York. More recently he has co-produced and contributed to historical documentaries broadcast on BBC Radio Four. He has written, directed and produced many productions in the USA and is currently vice president of a production company based in New York City.
 
Education:

Westminster City School, London. 1979 Certificate in Radio Journalism (With Merit) from the London College of Printing. Diploma in European Humanities, Diploma in Literature and B.A (Hons) in Humanities with Literature. LLB(Hons) University of London. Further B.A.(Hons) specialising in Film & Television History and Crime, Control & Social Policy. Postgraduate research in performance studies. Elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, June 1998. Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Associate Member of the Institute of Educational Assessors.
 
Current Research Interests:

Propaganda, information terrorism, dramaturgy of spying, espionage fiction of the 20th century, the history of anti-Semitism in media communication, media law and ethics and radio studies.
